Nurse Story: Jocelyn A.

Nurse Story: Jocelyn A.

In the bright, sterile light of the operating room, where precision meets pressure, Jocelyn has found her purpose. A nurse from Dallas, Texas, Jocelyn doesn’t just assist in surgery, she stands as a quiet force of advocacy and compassion, driven by loss, heritage and a fierce devotion to her community.

Jocelyn’s path into nursing began with heartache. Both of her grandparents passed away in situations where better care might have saved them—experiences that left her feeling powerless.

"My why? My grandparents both passed away due to medical errors and not enough resources. I just wish I would have been able to do something for them.”

That sense of helplessness now drives her to be the kind of nurse every patient deserves. As an OR nurse, she’s not just helping people heal. She’s standing up for those who might otherwise go unheard.

The journey hasn’t been easy. Jocelyn speaks candidly about the challenges nurses face, from unsupportive hospitals to the emotional fallout of COVID-19. She puts it bluntly: “Nurses eat their young,” a painful dynamic where seasoned staff tear down newcomers instead of building them up. In a profession where that mindset is still all too common, she’s had to find her own strength.

Still, with every shift, Jocelyn shows up. And in the most unexpected moments, she’s reminded exactly why she chose this path. One of Jocelyn’s most profound experiences came when a Latino patient, seeing her walk into the room, lit up with recognition.

“Hola, mija. Por fin alguien que me entienda. (Finally, I have somebody who understands me.) Those moments are there to remind me why I love being a nurse.”

These words stay with Jocelyn, affirming the power of cultural connection in care. Her presence brings comfort, not just as a nurse, but as someone who shares her patients’ stories, languages and fears.

Jocelyn isn’t just treating patients. She’s building bridges between community and care. With every patient, she honors her grandparents' memory and lives out the dream her parents always supported. Her story is one of resilience, representation and the healing power of simply being there. She’s not just making a difference. She’s making her community proud.
